The UAE experienced one of the most severe weather events in its history – debilitating floods – a year ago when record rainfall transformed streets into rivers and submersed thousands of cars, leaving people trapped and in danger. The country faced one of its greatest and most climate challenged struggles as residents were left marooned, streets flooded, and life came to a standstill.
What followed was equally historic – the country’s rapid resilience. The nation was restored back to its former self in a few days with swift, organized action from the authorities as they, alongside the community, collectively worked to showcase the pure response and determination of the UAE.
However, the April floods did not cease all work – their impact was immensely felt within the insurance sector as well.
More than one hundred thousand motor claims were filed in the aftermath of the floods.
“April floods”, said CEO of eSanad Anas Mistareehi, “were a true manifestation of unprecedented destructive climate changes in UAE history. Our estimates suggest derivatives of over 100,000 claims were made including motor, property and commercial”.
Due to damages to the vehicles, many of which were irretrievably left in floodwaters, insurers recorded more than four billion DH in incurred insured losses. Not only did the crisis assess the country’s infrastructure, but it also forced the insurance industry to develop at a breakneck pace, showcasing the sharpened focus required on climate risk management, customer service assistance, and support frameworks.
A year later, the UAE remembers the storm – not just for the chaos it wrought but for the incredible magnitude of help, compassion, and unity that poured forth thereafter.
